You stretch over the railing, fingers brushing against the cold, slick metal of the object. As your hand closes around it, the woman's fingers twitch, then sink back into the depths without resistance. You pull up a small, ornate locket, its surface etched with a spiral pattern that seems to shift under your gaze. The blue glow fades, leaving the locket warm and heavy in your palm. A faint whisper surrounds you, as if the air itself is exhaling in relief.
You snap the locket open, and inside lies a miniature portrait of the woman from the water, her eyes open and staring directly through you. Beneath the portrait, a tiny inscription reads: "Return me to the crown." The bridge shudders, and a section of the railing crumbles into the stream below. On the far bank, the orange glow on the hillside flares brighter, as if answering the locket's call. A crow lands on the signpost, watching you with an unblinking gaze.
